Temples of South India Tour (12 Nights 13 Days)

Day 1- Chennai arrival

Arrival will be in the capital city of Tamil Nadu that is Chennai. Welcome and guidance by the Vacations & Journeys representative to the pre booked hotel in Chennai. Relax and spend the rest of the day as per your discretion.

Day 2- Chennai sightseeing

Have breakfast in the morning and get ready for sightseeing of the temples in Chennai. The temples you will visit in Chennai are Arulmigu Kapaleeswara Temple which is a 7th century built temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati and the Ashtalaxmi Temple, Shirdi Sai Baba Temple in the Mylapore area of Chennai. Then the Parthsarthy Temple, Vadapalani Murugan Temple and the Marundeeswarar Temple are next in the list. At night, take rest in the hotel.

Note: The other attractions in Chennai are Marina Beach, Edward Elliot’s Beach, St. Thomas Mount, Fort St. Georgia, Covelong, Aringar Anna Zoological Park, etc.

Day 3- Travel from Chennai to Mahabalipuram (61 kms)

On this day transfer from Chennai to the World Heritage Site of the Mahabalipuram. Visit the ancient beautiful Pancharatha Temple, Shore Temple and Thirukadalmalli Temple. Mahabalipuram also has a submerged temple which is years old. The Pancharatha Temple is the most popular and the most visited temple with beautiful carving and sculptures. Panchrantha translates to ‘five chariots’ in English. Here each stone built chariot is designed uniquely and attracts the eye. Night stay in Mahabalipuram.

Day 4- Travel from Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry (99 kms)

After the morning breakfast you will be driven to Pondicherry, the next destination of the Temples of South India Tour. Pondicherry is a union territory and is known for its French influenced culture as it was a French colony until 1954. On reaching, check-in to the hotel and relax a bit. Then go for the visit to the Shri Aurbindo Ashram and get to know about this noble soul followed by the visit to Irumbi Shiva Temple. Relax during the night.

Day 5- Pondicherry sightseeing

Begin an early day with a delicious breakfast and get ready to give a treat to your peace-loving soul in the temples of Pondicherry. The temples to visit in Pondicherry are 300 year old Manakula Vinayagar Temple, Vedapureeswara Temple, Kanniga Parameswari and the Varadaraja Perumal Temple. The Kanniga Temple’s architecture is different from others due to the Indo-French blend in its architectural style. You can enjoy a peaceful and poised evening by the tranquil beaches of Pondicherry.

Day 6- Travel from Pondicherry to Trichy (203 kms)

Transfer to another destination, Trichy for getting more of the grandeur of the South India Dravidian Architecture temples. In Trichy visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the famous Ranganathaswamy Temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha and one of the important pilgrimage shrines of the Lord. Other than the Ranaganathaswamy Temple visit the Rock Fort of Trichy, Jambukeshwara Temple and the Kallanai Dam also if you have time left.

Day 7- Travel from Trichy to Madurai (132 kms)   

On the seventh day, you will be moving to Madurai city of Tamil Nadu which is actually famous for the Meenakshi Amman Temple. Visit the Meenakshi Temple situated by the Vaigai River, it is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. The temple has ravishing architecture, with an intricately carved and colored Gopuram this temple is one of the most visited temples of the country. It was designed by the architect named Vishwanatha Nayak. It is a must visit in Chennai. Relax and retire for the night.

Day 8- Madurai sightseeing

After breakfast in the morning visit one of the five Gandhi Museums in India, the Gandhi Memorial Museum where you will find the belongings and facts about the Father of the Nation. Afterwards visit the Koodal Azhagar Temple, the Vandiyul Mariamman Teppakulam and the Alagar Kovil Temple in Madurai and witness the alluring combination of art and spirituality. Stay at the hotel during the night.

Day 9- Travel from Madurai to Periyar (115 kms)

Now moving to the next destination which lies in the state of Kerala also called God’s Own Country is Periyar. Known for its greenery and wildlife, Periyar is a popular Tourist destination in India. Reach the booked hotel and finish the checking in formalities and relax for some time. Then visit the local spice market to shop for the locally cultivated spices. Kerala is known for growing the Best Quality of Spices found anywhere in the world. The enticing smell of the spices will fill your senses. After a long walk and shopping, return to the hotel and relax.

Day 10- Travel from Periyar to Kumarakom (112 kms)

Begin the day early and wake up the nature lover in you. Today you will visit the Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. On a jeep safari in the park you will get to see animals like sloth bear, jungle cat, Nilgiri mongoose, Nilgiri langoors and many more. This area is a protected Tiger Reserve and Elephant Reserve so you will enjoy the sight of giant Asian elephants and Tigers also. Within the park is the famous Mangaladevi Temple dedicated to a lady named Managala, who rose to ultimate salvation here, you can make a visit to the temple. Enjoy the forest exploration in Periyar. And in the evening you will be transferred from Periyar to Kumarakom.

Day 11-Kumarakom sightseeing

Famous for the backwaters coming from India’s longest Lake Vembanad, you can enjoy living in a houseboat in Kumarakom Backwaters. You will visit the famous ancient shrine temple of Ettumanoor Mahadeva and the Thirunakka Mahadeva Temple also called Nakkara Kunnu in the local language. These temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and are splendidly built in Dravidian style with beautiful murals and paintings on them.

Day 12- Travel from Kumarakom to Cochin (53 kms)

The next and the final destination of the Temples of South India Tour is Cochin. Although, Cochin is a city developing rapidly, it has not compromised with its culture and history. Here you will visit the famous old temple of Lord Vamana, named as the Thrikkakkara Vamanamoorthy Temple; it has a very big complex and spread in a vast area. The other is the Kadavanthra Bhagwathi Temple which is famous in Cochin as a spiritual centre. Night stay in the hotel.

Day 13-Departure
